sounds a very silly one but I decided to wear just trousers shirt and tie instead of suit to work with which my boss telephoned me to say this was not appropriate and that this was not the dress code of the company in a very nasty manner. Just wondered where I stand on this - I am only 8 months into the job and will be wearing a suit in future! - i just thought it was a little harsh considering it was a warm day and the occcasion was nothing out of the ordinary! ( i work for a food wholesaler!)

Hi Barty - unfortunately there is little that you can do but comply - the wearing of a uniform (or for Uniform, substitute 'smart business attire' 'suit, shirt and tie' etc) is normally a contractual requirement - either specific or implied, and is also a reasonable instruction.

 

All that you can do is to ask under what circumstances the requirement to wear a jacket and tie might be relaxed (shirt sleeve order) in the interests of comfort.

 

We have a similar policy, and whilst I might sometimes (OK - usually) leave the tie off when I am working alone, I will always carry one in my bag in case, and would always show up for meetings, or anywhere the boss was present. I agree that it is a pain when the weather is as warm as it is at present - and at least I can dress down in the car between calls - but it is pretty standard in a lot of companies, although many will also have dress down days or relax the need for jacket and tie when it is particularly warm.

Any advice given is done so on the assumption that recipients will also take professional advice where appropriate.

Barty9, may also well be told, that his services are no longer required ,and there isnt a thing he can do, as he has only been there 8 months.

For using a hand fan? Do you think the employer would dismiss a woman doing the same thing?

In fact, that's a point. How are women employees required to dress? We might have a case of there being indirect sex discrimination here.................
