Phone rings and man says he is ringing from sky and that as nearly had the equipment as on end of june for a year I could insure it. I asked him when was the free 12 months viewing form sky up and it only ran from agreement of sattisfied with offer with second tear complaints and asked him could he give me the date.

He said oh, you would have to contact customer services up for that and I added as the box has just been replaced I assume there is a guarantee on it still.

Anyhow he then said, chaged his tune that he was ringing up on behalf of sky and I said you are not sky so why say you are. He said on behalf of sky, so I said you should make that clear in the first breath of the call, not later as I am aware of [problem] insurance companies ringing.

Tells me they are domestic and general and if I check the sky site they are able to contact us with details from sky and I think this is disgusting as this is not the first time they have called, plus I am aware from these sites that they can be techy where they got the phone number from when questioned why indicate they are sky.

I feel sky are responsible as there are enough people saying similar calls from people saying they are sky, to prove it is not random. Sky therefore are putting us at risk of handing over phone details to who we think we can trust as it was only when I asked details on when my insurance ran out due to the free viewing and replaced box and he got stuck with his sales pitch.

SKY STOP PASSING DETAILS TO COMPANIES WHO SAY THEY ARE YOU. We also get the companies who are not related to sky but yet get the same details as domestic and general, sky say it is not them who pass the details on, so I suspect at a guess that there is a chance for abuse, if a company cannot ring and straight away admit they are who they are, then it is possible our details could be sold on when of no value to the legit insurance company.

Only a guess of course, but someone passes our numbers to these other charletons and sky say it is not them:!:

I also dont remember saying to sky at any point you can pass my details onto your friends or that gone 19.30 is an appropriate time for call from sales relating to my sky account or box, I always click no sales or details to be passed around.

Also sky after the 12 months of free viewing is up and I have to decided wether to reknew I will have to consider wether I am happy with you passing my details on, I mean they must pay you for these?

He even asked me how happy I was with the service of sky so far, hence me saying fine when given the free 12 months viewing due to problems. So I feel even the legit insurer if they are that have some reps clearly interpreting their promoted as the skys choice of insurer as we call ourselves sky!!!!! Or are we to assume any commision paid for our details is worth them being prepared to answer to deal with us ringing and depending on who you speak to you get either we give your details to no one. or yes we endorse domestic and general.

I suspect SKY know very well what they do, so why after years of reading such threads is it still going on?

Disgusting as I was just starting to feel happy with sky once more after the trauma of them having problems with taking over my broadband account by letting my line go dead due to faulty take over and not helping and then slamming the line when contract cancelled.

Please behave sky:-( I dont need the hastle.

I have been a sky customer on and off now for 8 years and until yesterday I had never received a call for Sky regarding set top box insurance. Long story short, my minimum contractual obligation lapsed some time ago and as I am happy with my package and the price I have remained with sky but not bought into a new contract. When I spoke to the gent yesterday who claimed to be from Sky he wanted to know why I didn’t my two HD boxes insured against failure or accidental damage, I simply explained that the £200 per year was an unnecessary expense and if anything happened to the boxes I would simply buy a replacement off ebay. He said nothing, when I say he said nothing I mean he hung up!

Unfortunately a lot of big companies out source telemarketing now. Eg Npower use RESQ contact services Ltd and they call you up stating they are infact Npower when they are not. The following week the same company will call you up claiming to be Eon.

This is clearly a misleading practise and should be complained about as per CPUT regs 2008.

Unfortunately your data is probably splurged all over the place because of your dealings with Sky. Perhaps send Sky a Section 10 notice. ( Data Protection Act)

Doesn't stop them!

We have had a few calls about insuring our Sky box, they don't seem to want to take no for an answer either!

Makes it illegal to call though, so you can report them.

Does it?

I thought the TPS was to stop unwanted cold marketing calls, but at some point you would have given the go ahead to Sky to give out your details? I.e. you've given them permission for them to call you?

For Sky, yes. But not for another company.
