I have recently come across my late mothers shares in Aviva. She has had them since Norwich union days. I do not know how or where to cash them in. Do I use my local bank or what?

My mams shares are only a few in number we are not rich!

Hello there, sorry to hear about your Mum.

I have sold shares through a local bank, not necessarily my own, but they will tell you what the charges are. You don't say what the shares are worth, but if you find that the selling costs are excessive compared with the amount you could raise, you might consider gifting them for charity. The last time I looked at this, stockbrokers called Killick & Co [might be a different spelling] take on small shareholdings and sell them in bulk. My OH had about 5 shares in a company and got rid of them this way. It didn't cost anything and should have helped someone.

My best, HB

Hi

Welcome to The Consumer Action Group.

I am just letting you know that as you haven't had any replies to your post yet, it might be better if you post your message again in an appropriate sub-forum. You will get lots of help there.

Also take some time to read around the forum and get used to the layout. It is a big forum and takes a lot of getting used to.

Once you start to find your way, you will soon realise that it is fairly easy to get round and to get the help you need.

It can be bit confusing at first.

Please be advised that my time will be limited for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
