On saturday my mate who is 57 went into currys to buy a new laptop. Not knowing anything at all he managed to pick up a good one but also paid wait for it...

£99 for them to set it up

£69 for office student edition

£7.99 what ever happens - apparently gets refunded as first month is free.

£39.99 for anti virus.

Ok now what currys actually did for £99 switched on the laptop and put office disk in and clicked install - Set up complete

He didnt know he paid for office and doesn't need it.

He thought Norton Anti virus was the cheapest anti virus out there because thats what they said. When i told him there are free antivirus's out there that do the same job he was shocked.

What the sales assistant saw when my my friend walked in...... Older person knows nothing... Attachment bonus for selling a laptop with extra software extended warranty and set it up.

THIS IS A COMPLETE JOKE

He was also excited because he thought he got a 50gb storage device to back up his photo's when i told him its online storage and he only has mobile broadband and for £3 he could get a memory stick off ebay to do the job. He was getting angry.

He wants his money back for all of this extra garbage and i told him to go into the store and argue but he is annoyed at how he was taken advantage of and fears he will just be fobbed off. So how does he or myself go about getting his money back? I'm annoyed at the £99 set up fee they charge when laptops and computers all come set up as windows 7 does it al itself. Scandalous.

So people any ideas? Thankyou.

Don't they have a no-quibble return policy?

I thought that but then thought how do you return something like that? there physically bar the office serial number and norton antivirus is nothing to return. I can just see the manager saying well to late now we have spent a whole 3 minutes setting it up and the software is now installed.

It does depend on what was asked at the time, £69 for Office is a reasonable deal, so is £40 for anti-virus, yes there are free versions out ther (I use Avast) but they do have limitations.

Did your friend not read the bill at the time and query it ? I'd certainly notice an extra £218 !

I recently bought a netbook in Currys and I was asked about various extras but as I didnt need them I said no and paid the amount as priced on the sticker.

Having said that, my mum recently bought a DVD Player and was charged another £40 or so for warranty but after chatting to my brother and I she realised it was a rip off and returned to the store and cancelled it.

Hi Danny

It's a long shot, but you could write to their Head Office. Explain whats happened and see what their response is. Was everything explained or did they just do it

with minimum information given. Were the costs broken down and explained?

He knows nothing about computers and you could sell him a plug for £100 if you dressed it up. He said all he heard was firewall this virus that motherboards he said it was all going over his head and he did explain that the laptop is only used for mobile broadband and pictures. He didnt know what microsoft office was untill i explained what it was. And he thought the setup was installing windows and making it all work etc. Well were going in sat morning and im going to explain it to the manager see what happens. Give the store a chance to rectify. I will post with the results.

It does sound like they took advantage but in Currys favour, they did say (or will no doubt claim they did) do you want to buy x and y to go with it and he said yes.

Its not really anything to do with computers, some people are just savvy customers and alas some are not.

to be fair the £99 set up is a joke but he does need internet security and most people use office without even knowing it opening e mail attatchments or anything. its proven that AVG and whatever else free anti virus are all complete garbage. however i understood they did norton for 30 and office for 60 with laptop purchases.

Got a full refund.... the sales assistant said it was illegal to give refunds lol we had one hell of a argument when i told him i used to work in retail computer sales years ago he backed off a bit but then when i said ill phone head office up again we got the refund. He dropped himself so far in it talking garbage he really did not need me calling head office.

That's not consumer rights, it's a goodwill gesture.

At the end of the day you have to question what you're buying. When I go into PC World, if I want a PC, i'll come out with just the PC, these addons are how they make money and they're keen to upsell. If you agree to buy it and take the service and the service is fit for purpose legally that's it. They're simply preying on those who don't know any better- sad for those who end up spending more but they are a business and they exist to make money. I don't agree with it but sadly, it's just a case of knowing what you are buying.

Hi, just read about your problem danny and glad you got a refund! I worked for currys a few years ago and a few facts back then (don't know if they still stand) was the 'what ever happens' cover plan we basically gave you a month free (by giving you a 7.99 discount if thats what it was) on your order. This then got you 2 quid commission!

All the extra additions there was no commission, but you had set targets each week and if not hit, you faced a nice hour long talk with your store manager explaining why your minimum wage ass didn't get the job done!

I have to say currys was an awful company to work for and your friend wouldnt have looked at his receipt because the sales assistant would of given his receipt to the warehouse staff to go and get his laptop out of the warehouse cage. The receipt then would of gone to a floor manager to 'sign the laptop out of the store' then back to the sales assistant to put in the bag with his laptop. Basically a con to keep the customer away from seeing what he has actually bought.

£39.99 for anti virus..

I would have been interested in seeing your receipt because the prices that you're claiming you paid sound a little off. Here are the real prices.

In store setup: 29.99

Office: 59.99

Norton: 29.99

Whatever happens sounds right.

There is no way to manipulate these prices unless you sold them at the full price then discounted them down which would be stupid of the CA when there are customer offers on most of these products when brought with a laptop.

The £99 prices is way too high for a setup and if £99 shows on your receipt then it must have been another service that was scanned in.

Their is a £99 pound set up service and a £29 pound software install (what your friend was after I imagine). All the £29 service does is install norton and office. Ensure its updated. Set up user accounts. And if you wish give recovery disks. That however isn't technically in the service.

The £99 service I haven't got a clue whats in it having not sold it as I see no value in it for my customers.
