If you've no idea what it's about then my own choice would be to ignore them. BUT, they've revealed details of a debt they claim you owe, and they may take further action. Carter is known for applying for a court order very quickly, although it tends to be for his own costs, rather than the debt - which is strange.

If they do take action, and the debt is nothing to do with you, they are in big trouble - and if it were me, I may just play along with them a while to see what they do.

The alternative is to send them a 'prove it' letter (click here) and see if they can provide you with any clues.

Be good to those who give you advice that helps - click the star to give them your thanks by way of a reputation credit.

I’d be asking them what’s changed from their first letter where they couldn’t disclose account details cos of DPA to now where they are happy to disclose it – and report them to ICO, especially carter the fool.

Hi Panther,

Good point - I didn't respond to their first letter so I wonder how they can assume I am the person they want and disclose details of the debt? Who are ICO?

I have sent the "prove it" letter - I know it's nothing to do with me so that should be the end of it.

The best place without a doubt for you to start is the DWP - you'll need to give them your NI number and then they'll talk to you about anything related to you. They will be able to shed light on what this is all about without involving DCA's or solicitors. Also, if you are pretty sure having spoken to them they've made a mistake, tell them and ask what they are going to do about it. If they say nothing, point out this would mean them paying to take the wrong person to court and ask them to put it in writing for you - it would be your defence. You would of course then get compensation.

If you know what it is about having spoken to them, post up all the details and we'll do all we can to help you. I've just finished an 8 year battle with the DWP (and won!)

Hi

Welcome to The Consumer Action Group.

I am just letting you know that as you haven't had any replies to your post yet, it might be better if you post your message again in an appropriate sub-forum. You will get lots of help there.

Also take some time to read around the forum and get used to the layout. It is a big forum and takes a lot of getting used to.

Once you start to find your way, you will soon realise that it is fairly easy to get round and to get the help you need.

It can be bit confusing at first.

Please be advised that my time will be limited for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
