Every so often something happens that helps restore your faith a bit and puts a smile on your face. If like me that happens to you once every 100 years then read on................

I moved to British Gas for my electric (we don't have Gas) 12 months ago. I was already on a social tariff with EDF (Extremely Dear Fuel) and paying a over £100 a month by D/D. The move to B Gas saw my payments reduced to £74, so I was quids in to begin with. Having not started giving them any money until February 2010 (they didn't apply for any) I was not really looking forward to my annual review in December. Amazingly I am well in credit and they have reduced my payments for 2011 to £62 a month from February. Which actually makes me think just how bloody much EDF were ripping me off by 12 months ago?????????

(I will get to the Free £50 bit I promise) (just indulge me a bit longer)

EDF 12 payments @ £120 = 1440 Br Gas 10 payments @ £72 = £720 (and £114 in credit) over the same 12 month period and very similar consumption amounts.

Drum Roll Please ........................

After seeing this inadvertantly on their website, I had to ring them up to confirm it. All British Gas customers on their Essentials Tariff are also going to be credited with £50 on their accounts because it has been such a cold winter............. I know it sounds to good to be true but it isn't. They are now in the process of writing out to all eligible customers over the next few weeks to advise them and I was told to call back if I hadn't heard anything in the next few weeks.

This is the link from British Gas:

http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/energy/our-tariffs/essentials-programme.html

The only draw back with British Gas Essentials tariff is you don't get any Direct Debit Discount worth about £15 a year. Otherwise I advise anyone and everyone to switch to this tariff asap, it really is this good. My Sister in law has just switched to this tariff and her monthly payments have halved.

Also B Gas are not applying any price increases to this tariff until April. The other tariffs have gone up but not this one. So no excuse, check to see if you can qualify for this tariff and get switching!

So there it is, for once a bit of cheer from the winter blues and hats off to British Gas for once but Shhhh don't tell everyone!

Thanks for this Simon.

As you will know, the whole energy situ is a minefield and keeping up wth things baffles even the most experienced.

Truth is we squandered all our dosh from our own North sea reserves in the 80s and Maggie did not put anything back.

We are paying dearly for those mistakes now.

The UK will for a long time to come continue to be forced to pay higher prices.

We are at the mercy of countries like Russia who have invested heavily into energy sectors-albeit by using BP to put in the infastructures only to sack the directors.

Just like the water,Telecoms, and Transport-our governments have sold out to foreign owners to help reduce national debt.

Ted Heath announced power cuts in the 70s because of strikes.....no need for power cuts now-many are forced to switch off heat and light because they have no money to pay for it.

The Kremlin must be laughing their heads off.

Thats fair enough, I feel the same about EDF. I wouldn't go back to them if it was free. Hopefully though those people on BG will benefit, so it is worth checking to see if you have been given the credit. If not ring them to ask why???? If you are on the Esseentials tariff you qualify!

Simples:-D

BT BASIC IS ALSO REALLY GOOD

Anyone on qualifying benefits like JSA ESA and others can get a really cheap phoneline of about £4 per month with a few quid in call credits thrown in for free, you can still get broadband on this line too, it is not very widely advertised either.

here is the link http://uk.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A7x9QXr...bt.com/btbasic

It's strange because I always hear people saying how dear EDF are, but I switched to them a few months ago, I had British gas & Southern electric before & mainly found them pricey. But i'm on key/card meters. Since switching to EDF I am noticing how much less I am putting on both meters to be honest.

I only switched for the club card points that get added everytime I top up mind you lol

Aye, its true....

got a letter 2 weeks ago informing me that because of the cold weather and im on the essentials tariff ( for both gas and electricity )....they had credited my account with £50....i looked at my account online....and they have indeed added the cash TO MY ELECTRICITY ACCOUNT!! LOL!!.....yeah, its been freezing and iv had my gas central heating on more, so to help with the cost we will add it to your electric account ( with i was in credit with anyway)....instead of the gas account......nevermind, cant moan at free money eh lol

Im with British gas for both dont believe everything they offer. I recently read about the essentials package and rang them about it.Im disabled, on pension credit, disbility living/mobility, what they dont tell you is they take everything into consideration and means test you. If your income is over £15,000 you cant go on it.

Then i had another question to ask them, id had my estimate for usage of electric for the year. They read the meter regularly so it was based on that. I have payment meter which i buy £10-00 a week and put in £520 per yr but on their estimate i was well under by £120.00 per yr. i asked for a refund but was told i coudnt have one.So someone some where is making some money.
