A mate is having his car fixed at a garage.

While working on the car, the garage has snapped a bolt and broken a part that was not broken.

They want to charge him a extra £90 + vat for their foible.

this legal ?

A bit more detail would help. What was being replaced and how old is the car? Bolts usually snap due to the fact that they become rusted in. Depending on the age of the car and position of the bolt, it could be reasonable for the bolt to snap.

If, however, soemthing is damaged on assembly by over tightening or fitting a bolt that is too short that then strips a thread then that is down to incompetence and the garage should not charge to put it right.
