CDUK chasing £40 for cancelled gym membership.

i was with the village hotel on a gym membership and i cancelled as i never went and i wasnt tied into a contract. they are saying i now owe £40 for not giving one months notice, even thought i wasnt aware of this and i never actually went in the month they are asking for the money for, they have now passed it on to cduk who ring me constantly every day despite me telling them to stop, they are demanding £40 which i know it doesnt seem like a lot of money but to me at the moment it is. i have recently been made redundant and i am finding money very tight. so i dont want to just hand over £40 to cduk. any advice what i can or should do? what would happen if i just ignore them?

When did you cancel ?

How did you do it ?

You need to tell them to put things in writing,in fact you need to put that in writing too.

Has the account been sold ?

There is regulation in place for dealing with this.

i cancelled just by cancelling my direct debit. i didnt ring which i know i should have. i totally forgot about it until i received a letter and numerous phone calls from cduk!

Ok did you get any paperwork from them (VH) ?

You say that you wasnt in any contract ? So was this a trial membership and if so did you get any paperwork ?

First thing we need to do is to stop the phone calls.

I can point you to sorting this but need answers to these questions first.
