I would appreciate advice anyone can give me re: gas bill problem. I moved into my house back in 1995 and has a new gas line connected in 1997. Despite numerous telephone calls and letters I have never had a single bill for this. I tried for about 5 years to get some sense out of British Gas but was told they could not help me without a customer reference number (which I had never been given as I have received no paperwork whatsover from them). Eventually I gave up... although until recently I have been collecting gas payment stamps as I was expecting them to realise their error sooner or later. They haven't. I want to know where I stand with this. I believe that because it is British Gas' fault, they can only charge me for the last 12 months. Am I correct? Also, am I still able to use by gas stamps to pay this bill. I would be grateful if anyone has a template letter/email which I could use to contact them regarding this.

To cover your back, I would suggest sending a letter recorded delivery to British Gas, as without any evidence you have contacted them, they will attempt to deny you contacted them in order to avoid applying the billing code.

To establish who your supplier is, contact the National Grid with your meter serial number. They will be able to provide you with your meter point reference number (MPRN) which a supplier can also use to find your details.

If no supplier is registered, you will only be billed from the date a supplier registers with National Grid as the gas supplier.

The Billing Code definitely applies so when a bill is produced, the supplier can only charge for 12 months prior to the bill date as it is their error in not billing. Your stamps will also be valid for payment of the bill when it does eventually arrive

Hi

Welcome to The Consumer Action Group.

I am just letting you know that as you haven't had any replies to your post yet, it might be better if you post your message again in an appropriate sub-forum. You will get lots of help there.

Also take some time to read around the forum and get used to the layout. It is a big forum and takes a lot of getting used to.

Once you start to find your way, you will soon realise that it is fairly easy to get round and to get the help you need.

It can be bit confusing at first.

Please be advised that my time will be limited for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
