I have recently been made aware of a fairly large Chaufeur drive company who routinely clock their vehicles by 1000's of miles.

I am fully aware that Clocking itself isn't a criminal offence but selling a car claiming the mileage showing is correct when it isn't, is.

It is is highly likely that in the future they will be sold on but that is not what concerns me, at the moment.

What I would like people opinions on, are there any tax fiddling implications re depriciation or VAT regarding the fuel used, these are potentially high mileage vehicles so for e.g if the vehicle had used 50k miles of fuel the VAT would have been reclaimed on that amount but at the end of the year that vehicle is only showing as covered 20k miles, probably not explained that really well but never having dealt with VAT I am unsure how it works.

Or is there anything else that can people can think off.

Well there are ways in which any serious clocking could be discovered, for example by checking service/Mot records.

Insofar as any benefit in relation to VAT from fuel, presumably any reclaim of VAT would need to be supported by paperwork(invoices/account info) from fuel actually purchased.I dont suppose that they would reconcile the VAT paid on every vehicle separately ?
