10% reward.what law is it

I was told of a bus driver at work who found a brown envelope on his bus containing £2000.he handed it over but not before he took £200 as a 10% reward.He said he could rightly claim it under a little known, little used law.Can anyone tell me if this is correct and what law it is.many thanks in advance.

never heard of that one personally-I couldnt imagine the bus company would be too happy surely ?

No such law - and in fact the money would probably belong to the employer if the owner of the money was not found

There is an expectation (only) that a 'finders fee' of 10% for any money found/discovered. However, transport staff have no such 'benefit'. They are required to return the lost item to their established 'Lost & Found' procedures. They most certainly cannot cream 10% 'off the top' before handing it in. What he did was theft, pure and simple. There reason why his stated justification was 'little known' is because it does not exist. If a grateful recipient of goods declines to repay the finder, that is their choice. The finder has no call, unless under maritime (salvage) law, whch won't apply in this case.
