download and install

microsost security essentials.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

if defender is turned off

i would be slightly worried about a background trojan running

unless this is a result of your PC having norton bloatware installed.

or another diff type of anti-spyware running.

give us more info.

well no

it's prob got nortons or something installed already

many if not all third party anti virus/trojan need to disable defender.

don't forget, two AV packages running, will often slow a PC and p'haps negate the idea it is better protected.

i think your best bet is to run an online scanner like:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm?s_cid=mscom_msrt

or

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

this will give you the piece of mind there is nothing untoward on the machine.

what made you doubt the machines integrity?

I have Defender running on Windows 7 also. If anyone needs to enable the hidden admin account (Vista and Windows 7) you need to:-

Run Command Prompt (cmd) as Administrator and type net user administrator /active:yes

Then log out or restart, you will be able to use the admin account.

To disable it again do the same thing but type no instead of yes at the end.

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)

imo

if you want to stick with MS, and you're thinking of using Win Def, then use MSE instead. MSE is alot more effective than the outmoded WD. MSE is also competing well re effectiveness against other AV's.

IMO
