Hi all, hope you are all well!

Can I just ask, after reading the posts on the subject of recording meetings and the complex issues surrounding this, what is the point in keeping a diary of the problems you encounter at work and remarks that are said if they can be disputed as no physical evidence to support them?

Does it become a pointless task or can they be used if so what should be contained in them?

Cheers peeps :-) :-)

Keeping a diary can become a pointless task, because it is only one sided observation...

What you need to do is agree with a manager that you email them once a week with whether the problem has become worse or is subsiding, and if any significant incident happens report it at once....

Hi,

What if its the manager you have a problem with and he is getting the full backing of his manager?

You are correct - a diary is one way of documenting something happening, but it is, in itself, unverifiable and therefore has some use, but isn't conclusive. The diary should document as much detail as possible, and whenever possible it should be cross referenced to other evidence - witnesses, e-mails, appraisals etc.

The more parts of it are verifiable, the greater credence can be placed on the things that you can't prove. But if there is no evidence at all, it would be exceedingly difficult to prove that harassment has taken place at all.

so documenting things like meetings when the manager come to the office has a pop about a sitiuation that he is not happy with or any unsuported conversations are useless?

I hate that they seem so clever and sly about it and as a employee you get screwed over and over again with little to no way to fight it. out of ear shot of other folk means freebie for them to do so then?

I would still keep a diary....... it is YOUR memory of a given event. It clarifies to you what you said / did / saw / heard. Perhaps some event does not make sense at the time but later, perhaps much later, it is put in context by subsequent events. If you have the diary your memory of that incident can be objectively recalled. Try and keep it factual though as a subjective opinion might not be relevant unless it is how it has made you feel at the time or how you perceived someone else felt eg witnessing someone crying. However that said an analysis of what you feel was the reason for the event might be useful as it puts it into context again.
