I've just been talking with my Mum about money and she's told me that she has two loans out with BPF - one for a car, and one for some training scheme she wanted to go on.

I found out that about a year or two ago, she couldn't afford to make the agreed payments so BPF asked her to pay set amount.

Turns out that this amount isn't reducing the loan capital and is only going towards paying off the monthly interest.

Is this right/lawful? Something tells me it shouldn't be as technically, she could just be in debt with them for the rest of her life.

Any thoughts?

Cheers in advance.

Hi Robbie,

I'll move this to the General Debt Issues forum for further opinion.

Unless the interest rate is reduced or the payments are increased, this could, indeed, go on forever.

Have you sought advice from one of the debt counselling services - http://www.consumerwiki.co.uk/index.php/Debt:_Where_to_Get_Help

They may be able to get BPF to reduce or suspend the interest which is causing the problem.

The alternative would be to stop paying entirely so BPF terminate the loans. At that stage, they may demand repayment of the full amounts but will stop adding further interest and penalty charges . They would place a default notice in respect of each loan but I suspect YM's credit rating has already suffered because of the late/missed payments.

If there are any penalty charges on the loans, you can reclaim these in full plus any interest added in respect of the charges.

Do you have loan a/c statements to check for any such charges.

For each loan, roughly what is the balance and when are they due to end.

:-)

We could do with some help from you
