just a little warning about diabetis in my dog and its costs.

well i love my dog jake who is now ten and has given me such unconditional fun and love..

The problem is when those sad little eyes asked you ever so nicely for that little scrap of your plate i always obliged..

The problem is he got a little overweight and now we are paying a huge price as poor jake is now type1 diabetic and we are at this moment trying to stablelise his suger levels via insulin injections..at first i was shaking like a leaf when i first had to do it and felt the same pain when he yelped with the needle and i hated taking blood from him for his suger level tests but 1 month has now passed and it does get easier and he mostly gets on with it ,his eyes have got cataracts in them now which is often normal..the costs of the drugs are now at £100pm which thankfully as a family we can afford..so please when your dog begs for those little scraps off you remember this story as in the long run it is just not worth it as you could be storing up trouble..my vet has said its not 100% certain that this has caused it but it has not helped, and is a major cause of it...i never thought i could give anyone injections but it really has become that easy if anyone reads this who has just found out that thier dog has diabetes..

 

how we found out was he was drinking water as if it was going out of fashion...

Salutory tail, (sorry couldn't resist) - don't blame yourself over Jake's condition, I have an OH with the condition and certainly wasen't caused by me, unfortunately unlike Jake he is able to visit the shops and buy things he shouldn't!!! Jake is a lucky chap to have such caring owners, sure he will improve soon. It is awful when pets get ill, we have just lost our dearly loved geriatric cat to an overactive thyroid and kidney failure.

Our pooch was diagnosed a year ago with diabetes and is on 10mls of Caninsulin twice a day, she too has cataracts.

 

I get my syringes from vetuk.co.uk as they are a lot cheaper than the vets itself, I could get the insulin from there too but prefer to get from my vet as it is a chilled drug.

 

It does get easier, but please watch for Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) as we almost lost our pooch in January(vet negligence but not our usual vets fault), and it is worse than the dog taking a hypo.

 

We were advised not to change the diet as it would do no good and be more expensive as the insulin controls the diabetes.

 

A wee hint is that if they have too low sugar, rub some honey or glucose on their gums. I now carry a mini mars bar in my pocket along side the poop bags, just incase when we are out.

 

We decided to get a companion pooch for Cordie and went on the outlook for a terrier sized 2 yr old, and ended up with a 6 month old GSD/Lurcher , yes I know big difference, and it was the best thing we ever did. Hurricane Lola as she is affectionately known in our house has been great for Cordie, and has kept her mental active.

Please don't beat yourself up over this, diabetes is so common in dogs. And we all do it with the treats etc. Your dog will stabilise. My aunt's keshond (is that spelt right?) lived 4 years with diabetes to 13 which I think was good for that breed. He had his ups and downs but life was good and it was time for him to start to slow down anyway.

 

My Dog Whisperer friend recommends the raw meaty bone diet and my vet backs her up with this. I have tried it, but Taz treats the bones as a treat and then looks at me for his regular Butchers and wholemeal mixer. She only feeds her dogs this and nothing else. They are all afghan hounds. Their eyes are bright as buttons, their coats are pure silk, their teeth are brilliant white and they are all lovely natured and fit as fiddles. So it obviously is good for them, if anyone wanted to look into a more healthy diet for their dog.
