I have been given a new job offer, however after providing two suitable references, it seems that my employer would like a reference from my former employer, even though I explained that he is dead! since i worked in a care home the home owner did not work with me and is not in a position to provide a reference. I explained this at interview and the manager said it wasn't a problem.:(

 

I was surprised to receive a call today asking me about my previous employer and it was stated that they had tried to contact them for a reference! a little bit annoyed.

Is there any reason (apart from the obvious!!) you might not want a reference from your previous employer?

Sounds as though they are using a pre-prepared list which states that three references should be provided, one of which must be the most recent employer.

 

Surely if you can point out that the previous employer may be reluctant to provide a reference on the grounds of him being short of breath, they might be willing to accept testimony from a previous, previous employer so to speak? Of course if that employer were also to be unavailable on the grounds of death then you may have the additional problem of the prospective employer becoming worried about the correllation between your employment and their chance of survival!

 

Sorry - it's been a long week. Sounds as if they are just not listening or using common sense.
