Story is that my elderly mother was visited by agents for Southern Electric.

She is signed up to BG fixed price 2011 for Gas and uses their essentials tariff for electricity.

 

The SE bods told that there would be no exit penalty due to BG since she had less than 6 months to go for the remainder of agreement.

Having checked the SE tariffs I saw that it was not such an easy feat to work out the benefits.

However I did establish that they were cheaper for electricity and slightly more for Gas depending on useage.

 

Then came time for swichover.

Guess what ?

BG billed £70 for exit penalty.

 

I called SE to complain and was told ....oh our representitive must have been mistaken....obviously if you have to pay 70 quid then we are prepared to cancel the deal and you can stay with BG.

 

So next-calls BG ..as usual 10 menus to press on phone keypad and 20 minutes waiting on hold whilst listening to Classical music and a message every 40 seconds that you are still in queue.

 

Finally someone answers and I explain things.

So we want to stay with BG.

Ok thats great he said-but too late to do anything now,I will need to raise a new order.

So what does that mean ?

Well you will need to go as planned with SE and after a month come back to us.

 

So why does it take 4 weeks I asked ?

 

Sorry its procedure.......

 

So am I missing something here-how many gas pipes come to the house ...I assumed there was only one ?????????

 

 

4 weeks to press a few buttons and send out a couple of computer generated letters.

 

Anyway that was BG. Next step-call back to SE.

 

Erm....ok looks like we will be with you after all for a month or so.

We will then be looking to return to BG is that a problem ?

"No thats fine"

 

And can you confirm that there will be no exit penalty fees ?

 

"Ah ok I think there would be but let me speak with my manager"

 

(At this point there was more smoke coming from my ears than in Red square last week)

 

"Ok in view of your situation we will waive the exit charge on this occasion"

 

She said it as tho she was giving a Christmas present !

 

So will wait and see.

10 minutes of a sales rep telling fibs turned out to be a situation that needed a lot of fixing.
