Ok, background first.

Ever since the infamous Lowells appearing as themselves on this here forum, the row has raged on here and MSE, the rights, the wrongs, etc...

Mixed in all this are the Google ads, which people with no knowledge (or desire to know by the look of it, who wants knowledge where a good conspiracy theory will do?) of SEO or indexing have decreed is further proof that CAG has sold out, bla-bla-bla...

One thing which intrigues me is a constant reference to ads for Payday loans etc... when I asked people to point me to them because I genuinely hadn't seen any, my comments were met with anything from derision to hostility.

Problem is... I really, truly, haven't seen any. I have seen pop-ups or CAG's own products, or explanations as to what a SAR is, etc... and the ads on the side for the books, will kits, etc...

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? I have my pop-ups disabled ever since those weird communication/conversations balloons kept on appearing with nothing in them (instant messages or something? can't remember now), and I never come on CAG via the front page, always straight on to the forum and I am permanently signed in, could that be the explanation somewhere in there?

I know inthe great scheme of things it's not the most important thing ever, but it just would be nice to know what everybody else is going on about!

Same here Bookie, not seen any ads. Really confused as to what is going on.

Not that happy to see DCA's posting on CAG but as they talk drivel and dont actually do anything to help/hinder anyone I dont suppose it matters. Just hope everyone is being extra specially careful about what information they are posting so that it cannot be used against them.

Advice given is my opinion only, I am not a legal or financial expert (far from it).

THANK YOU!!! I really wondered if it was only me!!! *sigh of relief*

They've always been around, Monx, as you say, they're not actually doing any harm (except the self-inflicted one by overbloated egoes that is), and if they try, then lord knows there's enough of us battleaxes to set them right. :-D

Hi Booky and Monx, hope you are both well.

Some folk like conspiracy and sell out theories, but that ain't the case, as I hope the following explains.

I might be entirely wrong here, as I have not discussed it with the site team, but here are my thoughts.

We all probably have CAG link as a favourite in Explorer, which takes us straight to the consumer forums, bypassing the home page.

If however, you do a google on Consumer Action Group and take the link for home page, you will see some "google generated ads", which as they are generated by Google relate to hot topics that are discussed on our forums, this could include reclaim PPI co's etc.

I have noticed a character (effectively like a poster or foorum member) called "steward" who sometimes pops up when you do a google search for a topic on CAG and he again displays google ads. He even has an avatar. Here he is:

You can use Google to search the web using these links below:-

Within the forum, the last post on a thread carries an ad for debt advice book.

I have just gone to CAG home page and there are some small white google ads perhaps they are the ones people are on about do you think? I have not seen any on the forums.

Yes! I have seen them at last!!! Then that say in great big colourful letters above or next to them: "ads by Google" ? THAT's what causing the self-righteous furore?

Can't speak for anyone else but I see Google ads everywhere and don't even notice them anymore unless they're flashing or right in my face anyway. Oh well, one little mystery solved.

So, NOT on the forums at all then. Hmmm, some people have been rather sparse with the truth then.... there's a surprise.

Can't see the Stewart you're on about Kenny, but I'm on Chrome, that may be why? Thanks for solving the mystery anyway. :-)

A pleasure Booky!

I'll raise Steward with Webby. I think he is software generated, perhaps embedded in the software upgrade and links in with Google search.

As for being sparse with the truth- that is always very disappointing. Hopefully people will soon realise as word gets out.

Ooooh!!! All becomes clear!

You mean, like on Pepipoo, if you're just looking, there are ads for NWNF in between each postings, or Afterdawn has ads for DVDburning for sale software, computer blogs have massive "optimise your internet NOW" and so on in just about every forum on the Internet, and if you log in, then they disappear? Is THAT what it's about? Ye gods!!! Some people really have WAY too much time on their hands.

Yes Booky, its as simple as that. Unfortunately some folk jump to the wrong conclusions. Once they have formed that opinion they find it hard to accept the real reason and form a pack mentality.

Yep, I get them all over - barely notice them after years of ignoring them!

I'm good, thanks for asking. Hate my job and know how the slaves felt building the pyramids, but apart from that all good!! How are you? :-D

I've gotta say - those ads at the top are a menace given the nature of this site, but it's no different than some of the others and CAG has to exist somehow - this has probably been asked elsewhere (gave up reading the upgrade thread) but can the financial element be taken out when they are generated?

That explains the ads bookie. It doesnt explain the people who got banned from the site for suggesting that it might not be a good idea to let lowells post on the forums

Well, a lot of people posted to that effect or derided Lowells constantly (me included) and we didn't get moderated (not banned, incidentally, moderated, big difference), so maybe the question should be: "what did people write that was so bad that it got them moderated"?

I saw some of those posts before they went and I have to tell you that if I had been site team, I would have done exactly the same. Nothing wrong with expressing your opinion, it's the way you choose to express it that usually is the problem. ;-)

This is how it appears offline, but not when logged in (IE Eight [getting the smiley when typing the number in preview). Doesn't bother me as it goes, get that 'steward' thing elsewhere!

Bookypost.png

As this is only visible when someone is not logged on, by implication, it infers that CAG Forum Members are not bombarded with these adds- quite simply, because they would be logged on as a user of CAG.

It also explains why a CAG member who had bookmarked CAG, effectively skipping past the Home Page and using a Windows password retainer, would not see the adds and would not be aware of them.

Hopefully, this clarifies matters.
