This is well trodden ground to have a "virtual" provider using another's network.

I've used 3 virtual providers in the past

Virgin mobile = T-Mobile

Tesco Mobile = o2

and as you say, Asda = Vodafone

I've got an Asda PAYG in the draw that cost under £20 (I let the kids take it with them to the park so I can call them back for tea :p makes them feel grown up) and they have no problem making or receiving calls.

The only difference I've found is who you talk to for support.

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

Or send a cheque or postal order payable to Reclaim the Right Ltd.

to

923 Finchley Road London NW11 7PE

Click here if you fancy an email address that shows you mean business! (only £6 and that will really help CAG)

If you can't donate, please use the Internet Search boxes on the CAG pages - these will generate a small but regular income for the site

Please also consider using the

C.A.G. Toolbar

thanks for reply. but does an asda sim work fully (incl. picture messaging etc) in a vodafone locked handset?

(btw, AFAIK Tesco uses TMobile.)

Can't tell you, sorry, I don't have a locked Vodafone handset.

Until 6 weeks ago I was with Tesco and the handset I had I could put an o2 sim in (but no others. I had tried them all) but my friend bought a Tesco handset and they could only use a Tesco sim. (and they're definitely o2. I'm ex o2 staff ;))

I seem to remember that Vodafone are quite good at not locking their handsets to their own network... are you sure it's locked?

was thinking about buying a 'vodafone' handset and using an asda sim in it, so not 100% sure whether such a handset would be locked or not.

yes, tesco now use o2. apologies.

Maybe a question for the VF web team.

I have used Asda sim in the past but in an unlocked phone which I use for VF.

My Mother told me last week that the ASDA PAYG apparantly came out tops in a recent which report.

Have to say I bought my Asda sim when it was 6 or 7p a call -its gone up a bit since then.

Will change thread title here so VF Web team can see it quicker.

thanks martin for reply.

asda mob is great so far. 8p per call/4p per text, and no reception probs.

i have already pm'd Kirsty! she said asda sim should work in a vod handset, but maybe not fully, eg re picture messaging and data, without unlocking. and to see if anyone else has used it in a vod handset for their experiences, or to test it in a vod handset. hence my thread.

have to say she was v helpful, she even said she contacted asda for info!

Great thanks for update.

I dont use mine for MMS or would try and let you know.I do have locked VF as well.

I think someone will answer this with certainty before long here.

Kirsty is doing a good job and I can believe she contacted Asda.....wonder if she asked them if they will be keeping their special offers from last week ?

On Sunday I saw they had garden table and 2 chars (posh ones ) for £15.00 reduced from £30

Also a gas Barby for the same price.

Was very tempted but had only 5 minutes to drive home for Rugby semi finals on BBC.:)

Edit-The edit button has seen changes following the recent site software upgrades.I understand that these changes have now been incorporated within site rules.

I am still grasping changes myself so forgive me for being unable to fully explain the specifics.

Theres a lot of work going on to address users concerns and also tweaking -Its been a big move and so things cant be done as quickly as everyone would like.

But the move to VBullletin4 has been one that will offer greater benefits and addresses needs that will compliment the ambitions to take the site to the next levels.in keeping CAG at the forefront for consumers.

No I think private comms should remain so.

You have told that she was happy to help-I think that tells us something !

Well if Kirsty is still working at almost 2am-then she deserves a green blob.

Ok if she has agreed then fire away.:)

Hi peeps

For transparency here is my reply to Ford

Hi Ford

This isn't something I have any details on here as ASDA operates as a virtual network operator and uses a different SIM to ourselves.

I have called ASDA on your behalf this morning (08453032732) and they have confirmed that the SIM will work in a Vodafone locked phone, however it won't be fully compatible and that to have access to data and picture messaging services you would need to unlock the phone.

I'd suggest before purchasing a phone locked to Vodafone to test it in a friend or family members phone (if you know someone on Vodafone) or you could test it in your local store before you buy.

Let me know if I can help with anything else

All the best

MARTIN3030 - Thanks for noticing the work I'm doing :) It's very much appreciated.

I didn't ask about the ASDA offer - but it is a good one. Although I did almost get mowed down by the hoard of people coming out of the doors bearing tables and chairs!

Take care

Hi Ford

We can unlock all phones except the iPhone and the BlackBerry Storm.

If the phone is on pay as you go and over 12 months old the code will be free of charge.

For pay as you go phones less than 12 months old a charge of £19.99 including VAT applies. The £19.99 will need to be credited to your phone before you apply for the code. Once the NUC has been issued the charge will be debited.

If we have the code on our systems we can provide it straight away. If we don't we'll request it for you from the manufacturer. This usually takes about 72hrs unless it's a Samsung phone (they have a timescale of up to 10 days).

Take care
