Thought I would just post on here about some strange phone calls I keep getting wanting me to discuss my mortgage. Other people might be getting the same and I thought my experience might come in handy!

The phone calls are from abroad, as my phone will not take withheld calls yet the number is not given when I dial 1471. The conversation always goes along similar lines to this:

Caller: Hello, could I speak to Mrs Blackadder please?

Mrs B: Who is calling?

Caller: Are you Mrs Blackadder?

Mrs B: Who are you?

Caller: My name is Brian Smith (or very similar) and I am calling from an organisation representing over 21 banks and building societies and I would like to discuss your mortgage. Can you confirm that you still live at 21 Dunghill Mansions?

Mrs B: Where did you get this phone number?

Caller: From one of our associates.

Mrs B: Which associate?

Caller: I am calling to discuss your mortgage.

Mrs B: Are you calling from my mortgage company?

Caller: No, I am calling from an organisation representing banks and building societies and I would like to talk to you about your mortgage.

Mrs B: Why would anyone want to discuss their financial matters with you? I haven't asked you to call have I?

Caller: I have important information about your mortgage.

Mrs B: If you are not calling from my mortgage company then you couldn't possibly have any information about my mortgage that I would wish to discuss. You are obviously a phone [EDIT] so sod off.

I then put the phone down.

I just wanted to bring this to other peoples attention. They have called me at least a half a dozen times in the past two or three weeks, only twice have I picked up the phone to them. Half the time you can't understand a word they are saying as their accents are so strong, and why would I want to discuss my financial details with a cold caller.

Obviously all a bit dodgy if you ask me. Has anyone else had dealings with these creeps?

Theres a lot of this going on at the moment.

UK regulations forbid this kind of soliciting by CMCs and Financial advisors-there are firms from abroad who are not subject to these who are phishing and then presumably that leads to offloading business here.

Theres allsorts of this stuff doing the rounds.

Advice is to ignore and hang up....just as you have been doing.

Don't get me started on those.

I am TPS registered. I never give my telephone number out to online companies etc, I make a number up when it is compulsory, I always tick/untick the marketing/sharing part. Yet, at least once, my number was given and it keeps on doing the rounds of these companies.

Brian or John from Mumbai call, I tell them I am TPS and to take my number off their database. They go away. Peace for a bit then it starts again. Then it goes quiet for a few weeks, I forget all about it, and ring-ring... "Helloo, this is Hamish (with an Indian accent you could cut with a knife), could I speak to you about...? " ARggghhhh!!!!

I just find it worrying that these people have my name, address and phone number, especially as they are calling from abroad. I am ex-directory, TPS registered and never put my number on any forms, so you can only wonder which 'associate' has given them the details.

And I really hate being addressed by my first name by people who have no idea who I am. Am I just a grumpy old woman or has this modern thing of everyone being your best mate just passed me by? :)

It's amazing where they pick up the telephone number. I insist people address me as Mrs Hobbit and not my given name. I have also remarked to them, I do not remember being formally introduced, have you never had etiquette lessons in the Borstal you attended?

I don't think they have a Borstal in Mumbai, Mrs H.

Look at us, maybe we should have our own Grumpy Old Women thread on CAG?

I think that perhaps we should have our own Grumpy Old Women thread on CAG. The older I get, the more grumpy I become and I definately think that general respect and standards have gone downhill. Here's a few of my pet hates for starters:

People who put their feet on the seats on buses and trains.

Being addressed by my first name by someone who does not know me and is dealing with me in a professional capacity.

People in the cinema who use their mobile phone. I've paid to see the film, not listen to someone talking (usually in a very loud voice) to their mate on the phone.

Emails wanting me to buy Viagra!

There's just a few that give me the 'Oh for God's sake' factor. I'm sure other people will have plenty more.
