HI,

On April 20th 2009 i started a new job, my previous employer did not inform HMRC by way of a P45.

My new employer issued me with a 'BR' tax code on my payslips, i have been on this code since April 20th 2009.

I have written to the tax office and they have informed me i am not entitled to a tax rebate as my personal tax allowance for the year 2009/10 has been used up by my previous employment.

My question is, how can i have used up my tax allowance for the year 2009/10 in my previous job when i had left that job around on March 29 2009?

will appreciate any feedback.

thanks

Hello and welcome to CAG. I'm a bit confused by what you're asking, because if I remember rightly, a code BR means that you pay the basic rate of tax, so you haven't been on an emergency code for instance.

Why do you think you should have a tax rebate please?

Honeybee, BR tax code is indeed basic rate, but WITHOUT any personal allowances, so worth pursuing! Do not use their rip off helpline numbers!

Good point Helford, thank you. I wasn't thinking straight, was I? Adding to that, your 2009/10 personal allowance ran from 6th April 09 to 5th April this year.

It seems the tax office may have got the wrong end of the stick, because your overpaid tax is from the current tax year.

Does that help, redgoals, or do you have more questions?

HB
