I have lived in the same rented property for over 10 years and It has always had a prepayment meter for gas and electric. I have been with Scottish and southern electric for around 3 years now. In November 2008 they sent me a letter saying due to an error with the Equigas meter I would be getting billed quarterly, not a problem I thought. Shortly after they sent a new prepayment card with the instuctions to put it in the meter to register it if I wanted to continue prepaying or to ignore it and carry on paying quarterly. I was quite happy to pay quarterly so sat back and waited for the first bill. Since then I have always payed the bill when it has arrived.


Today I received a phone call from them asking for an outstanding payment of £93 relating to the period Nov 2008 to March 2009 because they forgot to bill me for it!!! This seems rather unfair as I wasn't aware I had missed a payment, and it was their error on the meter and the billing. As it is over 12 months ago do I have to pay it? The man on the phone is ringing back tomorrow after he has looked into the case. Apparently the bill was lost as they had a huge backlog due to their almighty cock-up!!!

I have bills from March 2009 onwards. Never noticed at the time that they'd missed 4 months off them!
