Hi, I'm looking for some advice regarding my metered water bill. Never had a meter before and have noticed some odd things which my supplier (sww) doesn't seem to want to resolve for me. Could anyone please advise me where to look on here regarding sewerage charges? Thank you!:D

Welcome to CAG

You should really start a new thread under Water,

But this might help, I've picked a water company at random.

How is my sewerage charge calculated?

I have recently moved to a house that has a water meter. This is a first for me! When I received my first bill I looked through it to see how they charge. I noticed that sewerage charges are based on 95% of the usage (seems Southwest water like to use bigger numbers than other suppliers as they seem to base charges on 90%). for the first period in the quarter I used 6 m3 of water and sewerage charges were for 5 m3. That seems okay. The second period I used 12 m3 of water but the sewerage charges were based on 13 m3........I was confused.....I have phoned SWW 3 times now. They have sent me 2 amended bills still reading wrong. When phoning the 4th time to pay some money I was told my bill was higher than the original bill because no one had told me all 3 bills were estimated and 'for some reason' the actual reading hadn't been put on the system. I presumed because I had seen someone reading my meter that the last bill I received was accurate!!! Silly me!

Anyway, I have received the correct bill this morning. First period, usage 6 m3, sewerage 5 m3. Second period, 15 m3, sewerage 16, yes 16 m3! Am I just being thick? Please can someone explain this to me because no one at SWW can! Thank you for bearing with me!

Who is your water company?

I personally would not stand for estimated readings. It is nearly always possible to take your own meter readings and send them to the water company on-line. If you do this at quarterly intervals after the date you moved in you will get bills quartery in arrears and you should pay within 14 days. Ignore other bills even if they are based on the companies readings - you need to get them to understand that you are in control and will only pay quarterly in arrears using you readings. If you feel you must pay by a direct debit plan realise that this will be more expensive despite any discount they may offer.

There is no way that a total usage of 21m3 can equate to a sewerage charge for 21m3. 95% of 21 is 19.95.

You have already tried customer services on the phone without a sensible result. Write a letter of complaint and ask for a reply in writing,

My supplier is Southwest water. I refused to pay by DD, they wanted £70 a month, even though my last bill worked out at about £45 pm. Apparantly they have to go on an average......

Yes, I feel a letter of complaint coming on........I hate all this malarky! :(
