I urgently need a good security camera for my garden quick!!! (please see my thread below about security fencing for the background)

I need a security camera which my mother can monitor from her house on her pc, I have heard of some kind of IP camera, which you can monitor from another location on your pc

I dont have internet connection at the house I live in, but can the IP camera allow my mother to monitor the back garden from her pc at her home, I am scared as there is a big gang of thugs who have moved in next door and one of them is on tag for robbery and gbh, they have already robbed in the street, i really need help, the police told me if i have the video footage on the thugs committing the crime they will be removed from the house, please please help me

HI Tal

Yes, an Ip camera will allow a pc to monitor it, so long as a network exists. The internet is just an extension of that nework to the greater world outside.

There are many places to get a camera. I know of a company in Edgware Road, London called Henrys. Google them and I am sure they will come up. There are many companies. I think some of the larger DIY stores do home CCTV kits as well. There are alse specialist suppliers, just serch for CCTV in you location via Google.

Hope that helps

You don't have to go to the expence of a ctv camera, mine was almost £200. A nice webcam like the Microsoft Lifecam will give you superb pictures and no setting up as you just plug it into the pc and it will be set up for you.

You can use it to record as well so a record can be kept and cost only around £40 for the best version.

maybe this will be a bit clearer

you state "I dont have internet connection at the house I live in" that is a problem, the IP camera needs to connect to a local network , i.e, internet in your house, the camera does not broadcast to the internet its self.

if your mother is very close few hundered yards you may get away with an IP camera that is wireless,

NEVER FORGET

Unless your mother lives very close, you will need to get a broadband internet connection.

If you went down the lines of using a DVD recorder or a PC to record the images, what is there to stop the thief from taking your hardware - thus taking the images with them.

You will be looking at about £200+ for the camera; and at minimum £10 per month for the internet connection.

If you type 'home cctv ip camera' into a search engine; it will give you companies that supply self install equipment.

problem is i leave the house at 7.30am and get back about 6pm, so thats basically an open invitation for the people next door to rob my house - they have actually cut down a hedge at rear of the garden from which they can enter my garden and basically they can break the rear door and enter the house and nobody will notice them do it!

i paid over £400 for fencing only for them to use a chainsaw and cut the fence at the rear corner of the garden down, which they use to enter my garden.

i'm scared because they have already made one family leave their house after having smashed all their windows, my neighbours are really neighbours from hell, i really dont feel safe anymore

i need a camera that will let my mom who is about 2 miles away look at the video when i'm at work, i dont have internet, do you think it would be useful to just get the internet connection just for the ip camera?

You would need the internet for her to use an IP camera.... that is a given.

High network bandwidth requirements: a typical CCTV camera with resolution of 640x480 pixels and 10 frames per second (10 frame/s) in MJPEG mode requires about 3 mbps

So you would need a network connection of at least 5 mbps.... more if possible.

And by the time you have gone to the effort (and expense) of doing that...

...you may as well have bought a standard CCTV setup complete with DVR.

i really need a camera with a built in motion detection dvr, as if my house is broken into they will take the dvr and the memory, so if the dvr is built into the camera that is ideal

check out Y-cam - they make IP cameras and i have one at my house and it works very well. I have the Bullet Y-cam | Wireless Internet Video Cameras and IP Camera Range | Y-cam Knight, Y-cam Black, Y-cam White SD

You will need basic Broadband installed at the house, the cameras do not use the bandwidth as stated above, for really good video a basic 2mbps broadband connection will work fine. When you are not watching it, it doesnt use any bandwidth either, so you could get away with broadband that is "limited" if it changes the monthly cost.

The camera is wireless, so once you have the broadband connected, you can just plugin in the camera and away you go, no need for extra wiring.

The difference of this camera and a standard cheapy webcam is that it has motion detection in it and nightvision - so it can alert you by email when someone is in your garden, even at night time! I use it to watch my front drive, I know when the postman has been, when couriers arrive, who has visited... the camera records it all on an internal memory card, so there is no need for a computer to be on all the time.

Hope this is useful to someone! I spent alot of time researching this when I got one :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for being late to the party... Like jimmybrayks I've got a Y-cam for outdoor use and a couple of pan/tilt cams from eyespy247 for indoor use. Rather than recording locally - as a burglar can easily walk away with or trash the camera and recordings - I got my cams hooked up to eyespy's web platform and they send me email and sms alerts if/when something happens. Might be an another add on option as there system also works (I think) with a number of other IP cameras like Axis and Panasonic (both of which I would avoid, imho). Hope this helps. GG
