Hi all,

This is on behalf of my OH who has gone back to uni this year as a mature student. He has had some problems over the year with Student Finance messing up his fees, losing the forms etc but was finally sorted out a few months ago that they would pay his fees of around £1800 in full and they advised us they had paid the uni direct.

My partner then received a letter this week saying that he had to pay the full amount in 7 days or he would be kicked off the course. When he went into the uni to query this they said that they had received the payment from Student Finance but they refused to put it through until he paid a £90 levy fee for the year.

Now he should probably have paid this at the start of the year but to be honest he has been very annoyed that they seem to get absolutely nothing for this. It is meant to cover materials but they have to buy pretty much everything themselves anyway. He is on a photography course and they had to buy their own photo paper as about 10 sheets were provided for a 60 strong group, they have to provide their own workbooks, mounting materials etc. They are meant to get printing from the computer rooms but the printers have been out of ink for about 5 months so he has had to get that done himself as well.

We are both annoyed that he is being forced to pay this (they have even blocked him from the website so he can't get his results until he does) when he hasn't had anything for it. Any suggestions on how to complain about this and whether you think we will get it back?
