Hi, sorry not sure if this is posted in the right place or not. My partner owe's money to Sky for a subscription that they've cancelled early in view of an outstanding balance which we are unable to pay. Sky have written to us today to say that they are going to take the full amount from our Lloyds debit card within 10 days (this was the card used to initially take out the subscription although it has since expired). Have rang the bank who have said that there is no way that we can stop this payment as by providing our card details in the past authorises the company to debit from the account any money owed - even if the card no longer exists. The bank say they will have to honour the debit and take the account overdrawn - we have no choice... surely this can't be right can it?? We have asked sky to pass to a debt collector so we can arrange reduced payment but they won't. Really worried at the moment!

Hi sar011279

I really feel for you. To be honest I'm not sure about a debit card - but it wouldn't surprise me if it's true. However, I do know that when closing down a credit card account you're liable for up to 12 months after the account has been closed!!

Good luck:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hiya,

A company called SpeedLoan did this to me twice.

They took an unauthorised debit card payment so I immediately contacted Lloyds & told them this was an unauthorised transaction. Lloyds raised a dispute & the money was credited back to my account the same day.

Cheekily, SpeedLoan did the same thing about a week later. Again I telephoned Lloyds and they did exactly the same thing as above. They also made sure that a block would be put on SpeedLoan taking anything further which worked.

If Sky do take the payment I would try doing what I did above.

Don't mention anything about it being an outstanding debt or that it will make you go overdrawn because once they hear that, they will be seeing £££££s in overdraft fees.
