Advice on Dodgy Used Car dealers

Hi hopefully somebody on here can give me some advice.

 

Basically to cut a long story short, I purchased a car a few months ago. When I test drove it the engine management light was lit. I told them that if the problem with the car was fixed and the EML reset I would buy the car. When I went to pick it up the warning light was off. All fixed so I thought.

 

The car has now started to smoke badly so I took it to a specialist who told me that there was a fault with a temp sensor in the exhaust and the engine light was on. This confused both of us as it was not displayed on the dash. After inspection it turns out that the light was covered with black silicon to hide the illumination. I was furious as not only had I been lied to but this has cost me a lot of money and could have caused serious damage to the car. The car was not cheap.

 

What can I do to reclaim this money, should I be going to trading standards? If this practice is often carried out it could seriously injure somebody on day?

 

The specialists have detailed all of this on their invoice. Any help will be greatfully received as i am so annoyed!

Trading Standards would be my first visit if the dealer refused to take the car back/compensate me. Small claims to recover the amount paid out in repairs would be a minimum.
