I wanted to transfer my gas and electric to another supplier because I have had nothing but problems with British Gas. There are have been a catalogue of errors on their part, resulting in us being two months down the line since receiving our first bill from them and we have still been unable to set up a direct debit. So we decided to change supplier, but because we have an outstanding amount with British Gas they have refused to let us leave.

Surely as a consumer I have a right to shop wherever I want?? Can they make me stay with them until the debt is paid off.......as we were intending to pay by direct debit rather than in full

Hearing date 04/12/06 - Halifax £399.62

Pay the bill in full and then move.

Consider very carefully whether you are better off paying the new supplier by DD - if you have credit card debt the DD discount is not high enough for the extra interest you pay on your crdit card debt by paying your utility bills continuously in advance. If you take into account prompt payment discounts it is doubtful that anybody benefits from the DD system except the utilities.

Just out of interest how much are the arrears ?

Are the arrears for both Gas AND Electricity ?-you would be free to switch either of those if there are no outstanding amounts.
