Hi All,

Would just like some advice on behalf of a friend.

They recently used their bank debit card for a purchase. Prior to going to the shop, which is a minute away, they checked their bank account online, to ensure funds were available.

Funds were available, so they made their purchase, within only minute of checking the account.

Today recieved a letter from the bank saying that funds were not available, but as it was a guaranteed payment, they would pay the amount, but levy a charge.

So checked the statement online, and the card payment is listed as going out, however so were some bank charges. As he is on benefits, he tries to ensure funds are available before he makes any purchases.

He called the bank and pointed out that the card payment is listed before the bank charges, and that if he had gone to a cashpoint, he could've drawn the money out, and if the funds were not available at the time, his card would've been declined, as had happened before, which is why he checks his account before making purchases.

Bank were unhelpful, only saying the charges must've gone out at the same time, and they had it listed that the charges went out before the card payment. This couldn't be so as he explained, the card payment would've been declined at the time.

So, now they have levied a charge, the only funds he recieves are carers allowance with income support, and they have refused to cancel the charge levied for what they call a guaranteed card payment.

Due to him only recieving benefits, any charges, even if small, will cause him problems.

I'd be grateful for any advice!

Thank You!
