A friend of mine is having some trouble with her work. It would seem as though a manager from her office has been discussing specifics of my friends employment, with individuals outwith the company. Information discussed includes personal medical issues.

What sort of steps should be taken against the company to ensure that my friends details are no longer discussed, and what are the company obliged to do with regards to the fact that personal details have been disclosed by someone in a position of trust?

She needs to request that the company provide her with a copy of the companys grievance procedure, if she doesn't have that already.

Then she needs to submit a formal grievance.

Disclosing personal medical issues is a serious matter.

I deal with personal information in my job and if I starting gossiping about why people were off work I would expect to be disciplined as this is serious mis-conduct.

The difficulty here will be proving that the information has been shared inappropriately.

A breach of confidentiality is a serious matter, moreover when in relation to medical issues/records...

You could raise a grievance... as mentioned by 'elpulpo'
