Hi,

Today I was in Boots in central London, I took out a eye balm worth ten pounds from it's packet to test the colour, I then stupidly forgot to put it back and went to get something from my bag, as i did this I must have put the tester in my bag not realising what it was (I am quite forgetful as pregnant).

I then went to the counter and paid for my shopping, just as I was leaving I was stopped by a man, who took me downstairs, they searched my bags and found they eye balm and the man had an empty box on the table.

They said were not going to call the police unless I admitted I stolen it, I stood my ground, but then they got on the phone and the panic set in, what if the police don't believe me. I am due to start my teacher training PGCE in September and can not afford a criminal record.

They made me sign a form three times that admitted I stolen the product, they made me write a mini statement when I said so, they wrote it and I signed it, stating yes I am guilty I took a £9.99 product without paying, they went through my bag, looked at all my cards and took down my name and address, even keeping my company where I work business card as well.

They said that I would be issued a fine and handed me a Notice of Civil Recovery, which I gather is the EVIL RLP!!! I know they will send me letters to get silly payment and I just want to know what next?

I have also be banned from every boots in the UK and had to have my picture taken (madness)

I am very worried mostly about the six years Data Protection Act you get put on, which worries me as I am 29 and am scared it will have an affect my credit rating, buying house, and most importantly, my position as a teacher in schools.

Thank you

Please do not be scared. I know it must be a very difficult time for you but you must not let THEM get away with treating you like this. If you are serious about becoming a teacher you need to ensure that you hold these scumbags responsible for their actions. I know it can be a difficult time especially in your condition so here is what I recommend you do. Take a step back for a couple of days. Read around the threads to see what you are up against. You will quickly realise that you have been the subject of a particular nasty [problem]. Citizens Advice Bureau have just published a report highlighting this [problem] as practised by RLP and others. Personally, I would be tempted to go to the Police and press charges against them.

There is a template on one of the threads that will you need to complete shortly but I would just wait a couple of days. The site moderators will be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Thanks,

From what I gather they are like a private fines company, making money when there is no need too. I think it should always be the case the police get called and it gets dealt with and if there is crime committed then they can recover costs from the person through the police. That is what we need! I have read the CAB report on this and this company is a [problem]. BUT... what worries me is the data protection act. It seems you go on it as "Dishonest" preson if you pay the fine or don't pay, is this correct? What is the list and how will effect me or is it their list that they share with other compaines, also because my picture was taken, will this be used against me (apart from store bans throughout UK, which to be honest I would not shop in a boots again after reading some threads here)

Cheers
