I am wondering if any kind people are able to help.

My friends DD has been offered a job in Brighton and she needs to rent. The job is only paying £13,000 and she is single, no kids. She only wants to rent a bedsit and we were wondering if its worth her jumping through hoops to claim HB. The rent is likely to be around £450 per month

Has anyone been in a similar situation or can advise

She may be entitled to some housing benefit. If you look on Brighton Councils website, some councils have calculators on there to see if you can qualify and how much you are liable to be entitled to. It is actually called Local Housing Allowance now.

There are a few sites like, entitledto.co.uk that if you punch in the details, it will give you an idea of what your entitlements to things like benefits and tax credits are, not sure if it covers Local Housing Allowance though. Your friend could also ring Brighton Council and they may be able to give her an idea over the phone.

Hope some of that helps, no doubt someone else will be along with a better knowledge than mine.:)

Here is the link for more information on LHA and LHA calculator available on the Brighton website.

local housing allowance rate calculator - Brighton & Hove City Council

However, this just shows the maximum amount she could claim not what she would be entitled to on that salary.

www.entitledto.co.uk should give details of what LHA she would be entitled to on her income but she will have to put the maximum amount she could be entitled to that she gets from Brighton's website.
