Hi Guys, basically - ill outline my position.

I seen a car on autotrader, white mini one to be exact. the dealer calls himself mini manchester. - but he is not - HOWEVER i contacted him to see the vehicle. went to his apartment block, private estate - nice place. He shown me the car - perfect, clean hpi ( i work at an insurance company so make all relevent checks myself ) - i asked about putting a deposit down. He said i could but he would need me to take the car by the end of the week. I went back the following day with a friend who knew more on cars, he checked it out - everything seemed fine, he shown us the docs, BUT HE ONLY HAVE A PHOTOCOPY OF THE V5, he said as the car was on a private plate, he is in the middle of getting a new 05 plate from the dvla. - however, i text him asking where things are up to and he said i might need to take the car 'as is' until the reg transfer is complete - the dvla said this is illegal and he cannot sell it me on a private reg anyway. ANYWAY - he had 2 other white mini ones there, for sale. one i was wary of as it said cooper on the back but the hpi stated ONE. could it be possible that he is just swapping these registrations numbers around? The cars are identical. I am not taking the car on the current reg, and i need to find out the previous owner as i want to contact her and ask if she actually legally sold the car to this man. The car has come from Reading but on all the cars there are hpi checks in oldham and then by the dealer in whitefield.

The DVLA wont tell me if a reg request has been processed nor the last owners details obv for DPA reasons, but they can simply answer yes or no to if a request has been submitted cant they?

I guess my question is, does this sounds dodgy to you? - The dealer also calls himself mini manchester but on the hpi certificate he has printed (which looks fake by the way - as i make real ones) his dealer name is completely different?

Any advice please help!

I have sold a car previously after taking a private reg off it. I had received my V778 to get the new plates made (obviously) and put them on the car, but thenew V5 had not yet arrived. I had kept a photocopy of the original V5, and had all the paperwork showing the approval of the transfer from plate A to plate B which I also showed the new buyer. As soon as the new V5 arrived I went up to his house and completed the transfer the same day, which was only about 4 days after he took the car.

Not strictly perfect in the eyes of the DVLA, but not sure I'd go as far as saying illegal.

Bottom line is though, if you're not feeling happy with the situation, then don't go through with the purchase.

Thanks Crem, ive read alot about this siuation and the v5 always turns up, as the car is alot of money, im not sure if i will go through with the purchase, as the seller doesnt even want to wait unti the new plates are on but just wants me to take the car. Hopefully will speak with him tomorrow and he will allow time for the v5 to follow before sale.

Sounds as slippery as a slimy snake in oil.

He just so happens to have another mini one in the same colour does he? And it wouldn't be that one you are getting after he finishes with the number plates would it?

Alarm bells went off as soon as you said he is not the dealer he said he is. Why would you even consider dealing with this dodgy git?

the thing is, i have seen all of the white minis he has on sale. and they are slightly different interior wise, so i would know which one i had paid for, im just worried that he could swap the reg, but then again, if i have seen the registrations i will know of he has just put another white minis on to it wouldnt i. I guess i still have that doubt in the back of my mind that he could be doing this, otherwise i dont know why he would have 3 all the same of the same colour.

my dads ringing him today to tell him were not handing any money over until we see the full V5 document in his name, and the amended MOTS back from the dvla, along with the new tax disk. Once he has everything in order, we will he happy, but until then, we cannot prove if hes a dodgy dealer or not. so i guess we will have to wait. my problem is if he backs out of the deal and he cant wait up to 4 weeks to recieve the documents back, i should really be entitled to my £250 cash deposit back? should i? as im not backing out im just saying we will buy the car the proper way and wait for all the log book and reg change... im not being paranoid am i? its just common sense to look out for these things when you buy from a private dealer?

Oh and yes - still concerned about the company name change, thats not listed at companies house, i presume he calls him self mini manchester. but used to be under another name. Its good that i work at an insurance company i can pull a lot of checks on the vehicles, but i know the vehicle is super dooper! just the salesman if iffy. i smell a rat ...

Thanks

im just worried that he could swap the reg,

Look at the VIN number either in the engine bay or sometimes on a plate in the windscreen, he cannot change this without it being bviously ground out/altered.

If he swaps the plate this will be same number unless he tampers with in, if unsure take someone with you that knows what they look like.
