Fraudsters are sending out thousands of [problem] emails to coincide with the tax return deadline, and may continue to do so in the future. Anyone caught out by the [problem] could have their bank account emptied or find some additional shopping charged to their credit card. The "phishing” email is likely to have the heading ‘You have 1 new ALERT message’ You are then requested to log in to your online account to read the message which will state that you are entitled to a refund, the fraudsters then requests your bank or credit card details for the refund to be paid into.

These addresses have been used to distribute the [problem] Tax rebate emails and some may differ slightly so watch out:

officer.robinson@hmrc.co.uk

securemail@hmrc.gov.uk

hmrc@tax-revenue.uk

tax.refunds@hmrc.gov.uk

attached.form@hmrc.attached.gov.uk

service@hmrc.gov.uk

hmrcrefunds@hmrc.gov.uk

refundsdept@ir-efile.gov.uk

noreply@hmrk.co.uk

customers@hmrc.gov.uk

taxcredits@hmrc.co.uk

HMRC informs customers of a refund by post only. HMRC does not send out emails using those email addresses above and warns taxpayers not to respond to the "phishing" e-mails. If you have received one then forward it to HMRC at phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

Be careful out there. . . .
