The number of people with wheel clamping licences has risen since a consultation on reform of the industry began, the RAC Foundation has claimed.

What a complete load of bollocks from the home office. An SIA license is mandatory for anyone engaging in vehicle immobilsation.

It does suggest that the licenses and appropriate checks are not being stringent enough.

I have always worried that as the PPC income drops from "the invoice method" that we would see a rise in clamping.

The elimination of the invoicing system and a clamping system with an independent right of appeal would be good for all IMO.

Much better than mail scams and clampers putting up tiny signs in the dark and running off with hundreds of pounds in cash with no come back.

But as usual, we just have a watery ineffective set of laws.

The whole thing could easily be overhauled overnight if the government wanted.

I thought that we did have an independent right of appeal - namely HM Courts.

Do we really need another toothless dog like the SIA which is supposed to be independent. A lot really depends on the how independent the appeal body is (i.e. who funds it and appoints to it?).

Can we really trust government to get it right? The dropped a major clanger last time out and we got the turd that is the PSI Act and its august body the SIA.

I'd tend to agree with those who want the practice stopped but there has to be a balanced solution which protects landowners and vehicle drivers/owners.

I couldn't disagree more...

at least at the moment you have the luxury of ignoring the [problem] invoices, based on alleged breaks of contracts that you never agreed to, possibly never even saw and wouldn't stand up anyway.

If they clamp first, rather than send invoices, then you'll be forced to pay the fees, (if only to get your car back) regardless of any circumstances.
