Irish burial at Sea

Mick and Paddy had promised their uncle Seamus, who had been a seafaring gent all his life, to bury him at sea when he died. Of course, in due time, he did pass away and the boys kept their promise.

They set off with Uncle Seamus all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat.. After a while Mick says, 'Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out, Paddy?'

Without a word Paddy slips over the side, only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. 'Dis'll neva do, Mick. Let's row some more.'

After a bit more rowing Paddy slips over the side again, but the water is only up to his belly, so they row on.

Again Mick asks Paddy, 'Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out, Paddy?' Once again Paddy slips over the side and almost immediately says, 'No, dis'll neva do.' The water was only up to his chest.

So on they row and row and row and finally Paddy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Mick is really getting himself into a state when suddenly Paddy breaks the surface, gasping for breath. 'Well is it deep enuff yet, Paddy?'

'Aye 'tis', says Paddy. 'Hand me da shovel.'

I actually find this offensive!
So do I.

Stereotypical and pandering to peoples prejudices. Still, that's enough about your avatar, the joke was quite funny ;)

LOL.

If you find this offensive then perhaps the Bear Garden is not the place to be.

Just to balance things up and in the hope that our English members will laugh as loudly I will explain why an Englishman laughs three thimes when you tell him a joke.

The first time he laughs because everyone else laughs

The second time he laughs next day because he thinks hes got the joke

The third time he laughs is a week later when someone actually explains the joke to him.

Irish people laugh all the time at jokes about themselves. In fact different counties laugh about jokes concerning the residents of another county.

If you think the Irish havent got a sense of humour just look at our politicians

Thought I'd butt in and add although I didnt find it offensive, telling jokes about the Irish is rather old hat and a bit naff to be honest and generally it isnt acceptable anymore (although perhaps the 'target' has just moved on, the 'We're from the Isle of Mann' jokes on the Fast Show for example).

I was in a restuarant once and a g/f of mine made the comment 'derr, thats a bit irish' meaning 'a bit stupid or dumb', at the end of the evening an irish lady next to us did make a comment about this remark and to be honest I agreed with her.

I'm sure we are all aware that context of the joke is, all Irish people are stupid, what's next for the Bear Garden, black/asian/paki jokes ?. I hope not..lets stick to jokes about DCA's :)

Lighten up. Every race makes jokes about another race. The Irish themselves make jokes about themselves and in fact regard Kerrymen as being stupid. Frank Carson has made a successful career telling jokes about the Irish. If you cant laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at

Well Im Irish and I didnt.

I'm not stressed about this and I agree, people to tell jokes using race and racial stereotypes, and I may tell similar jokes if im out and about with close friends, however, The CAG Forum is a wide group that no doubt encompasses many ages, races, etc and I dont think its really suitable venue for telling jokes about how dumb or stupid people because thay hail from a certain country.

I'm sure you wouldnt want the Bear garden to become home to all sorts of racist/offensive jokes.

The fact the you didnt find it offensive doesnt make it ok, clearly others here did.

If I were to walk upto an ethnic minority guy in the street and say "no offence to you but.......", and then proceed with an offensive/racist joke' I doubt It would be well received. The fact you included the first line doesnt actually mean anything that follows is automatically ok.

The comparisons are taking things out of context, and can do nothing to change the views of those who are minded to agree on either side.

I dont see Kiptowers intentions as wanting to offend anyone.

Its a shame that light hearted banter cannot be taken in the spirit and innocence that it was posted.

We DO have to take everyones thoughts into account but this is the bear garden, and theres only been one complaint which is being looked into.

Where do we draw the line about jokes. Are their any jokes at all which wouldnt offend someone.

I defy anyone to tell a joke where some minority, race, creed or a.n.other is not offended. Its impossible.

My builder (whom I've known for over 10 years) is Irish and he's always telling "Irish" jokes. I don't think for one minute that this joke was supposed to upset anyone.

I could tell my Beckhams on the plane joke, and that'd probably be safe because the Beckhams won't need to be on CAG.

Quite. I'd post a little more on this, but I think it'll be more fun to have Avenue Q say it for me:

Forgot to add... Warning explicit lyrics!

One or two near the end-but they are tongue-in-cheek and part of the message in the song.

The audience certainly dont appear to have any problems there.
