A former employee at HSBC’s private bank in Geneva stole client data between late 2006 and early 2007, the bank said today. Ten of the bank's wealthiest customers were affected by the theft, which was discovered during a period of police surveillance in 2008. The bank was told of the security breach after a prosecutor interviewed the person suspected of stealing the data. A spokesman for the bank suggested that the clients affected by the breach had only recently been told because “the data was not sensitive”. However, HSBC refused to comment on the size or precise nature of the data, or the motive for the theft, although the French Budget Minister, Eric Woerth, has said that the employee passed stolen information to French tax authorities.

The informant was not paid for his services, he said. Mr Woerth added that the information was one source for a list of 3,000 suspected tax evaders with Swiss bank accounts that he received in August. The case is ongoing, but the bank said that the matter was now “in the hands of the Swiss authorities” and that it did not know how long it would take for it to be resolved. In a statement, it said: “HSBC continues to support the authorities with their enquiries in this criminal inquiry.” The suspect, who was employed by the bank's IT division at the time of the theft, is no longer working there. The security breach is the latest event likely to unnerve banking clients who value their privacy. Last year, police in Liechtenstein launched an investigation after data stolen from the tax haven’s LGT bank ended up with German tax authorities.
