Britain's households are being inundated with calls from lenders urging them to take on more debt in the run up to Christmas. According to the Call Prevention Registry, a leading anti-nuisance calls service provider, almost half of all unsolicited telemarketing calls to households this month have been from loan and debt management organisations trying to persuade consumers to take out a new credit card or personal loan.

The number of calls from debt management organisations has increased by 50pc since October, according to the Call Prevention Registry's "Nature of Nuisance Calls in the UK" survey. Paul MacKenzie-Cummins, a spokesman for the Call Prevention Registry, said: "Since the end of September we have seen a sharp rise in the number of consumers who have been receiving telephone calls from organisations trying to persuade consumers to take on more debt in the form of credit cards or high interest personal loans. But the scale and methods used by these companies is nothing short of shocking.
