Lloyds, Britain’s biggest retail bank, has boosted profits from current account charges by 20% to almost £500m in one year, despite political pressure to treat customers fairly. The Supreme Court last week dashed the hopes of millions hoping to reclaim penalties for unauthorised overdrafts after it threw out a case against the banks by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

 

However, despite the court’s judgment, the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) have pledged to bring the banks to heel. Sarah McCarthy-Fry, exchequer secretary to the Treasury, said: “We are determined to ensure the system is made fairer in the future.”
