Some really good news (for me anyway)!

I finally picked up the keys to our new place today, exactly 10 months after our offer was accepted. It's been a very long road with one buyer pulling out at the last minute (he changed his mind, apparently. Shame he didn't change it a bit earlier!), one buyer doing a disappearing act and finally the third buyer coming through.

 

The OH is of course away, so we won't be moving for at least another two weeks, but even so it's finally ours and it's really lovely. Brand new, no stairs, lovely big shower cubicle in a bathroom I do not have to share with the rest of the family and right in the centre of town so even I can walk to the shops/library/leisure centre.

 

I'm really, really excited!

I've been with the OH for 6 years now. We thought it was about time to take the plunge and actually officially live together! It was actually a bit weird picking up the keys without him, especially as he's paying for it! I just hope we can get everything organised to at least spend christmas day there. He isn't often home for christmas (or anything else for that matter) so it's already special, but we've also got a child each in their first year at Uni, so first holiday back home. I really would like this christmas to be really special.

I've just got back from spending an absolutely horrendous amount of money in Ikea. It's 27 years since I left home for good and this is the first time I've ever been able to buy new furniture. Absolutely everything up until now has been second hand, often 'donated' by family. I never, ever want to forget the tough times because it's made today so much better. I'm sure some of the other customers thought I really was mad because I actually got excited over choosing the most trivial things, but it's such a rarity. I am so fortunate to be able to do this and I hope the novelty never wears off.

I think the poor lad on the 'home delivery' counter nearly fainted when he saw the procession of trolleys, but then we are furnishing a 4 bed apartment more or less from scratch, so there's bound to be quite a lot. I had 4 people with trolleys following me around the warehouse bit, and we still had to go and get another one plus there's all the stuff that they pick for you. I did warn them that the lift isn't huge so some of it might have to go up the stairs, but it is only one flight!

I was banned from looking around the kitchen gadgets stuff - it's the one thing we do already have plenty of - but that was more because of time issues than anything else. However, I could very easily have spent twice the amount if we hadn't stuck fairly rigidly to the shopping list.

I have to say the home delivery charge really is worthwhile. The store is 40 miles away, there was of course absolutely no chance of it fitting in the car (or even three cars with roof racks), and we don't have anyone who could drive a hired van for us until the OH gets home in 2 weeks, so £65 was a bargain.

I am having nothing to do with assembling all this stuff, other than supervising. If they want beds to sleep in and wardrobes to put clothes in then they know what they have to do!

 

PS I really ought to thank Bank of Scotland since it's the compensation they paid me nearly two years ago that paid for all this stuff. I refused point blank to let the OH pay to furnish bedrooms for my kids. That empty savings account is making me very nervous now though!

Kitchen gadgets and me are a weakeness i love cooking so i buy everything we need yep u can never have to many trays, saucepans etc.

And then of course there's the really useful stuff that really will get used all the time, gets used once and then sits in the back of the cupboard for ever. Hand graters (leccy one is so much quicker), potato slicers, and the pasta machine. I used it once, and tagliatelli has forever after been known in our house as tangliatelli. The b****y stuff doesn't stick together when the chefs do it on TV.

I love using my pasta machine its aleast once a week l use it and have only had the sticking together problem a couple of times but thatwas on first use.

 

i have a tip for u and making pasta.

 

This is for ONE adult. Children can have half the amount or 2 can share.

 

100g of 'OO' flour or pasta flour (mcdougals is the only 'OO i can find).

1 large egg, beaten.

 

Place all the dry ingrediants in a bowl make a well and pour the egg in the well. then from the sides take the flour and mix into the egg mix using a fork.

 

When all combined get ur hands in and kneed the dough for about 10 mins.

 

Put in fridge for an hour then seperate the ball into as many pieces as u like, i do 4, and on a lightley floured surface, i use SR flour, roll out he dough pieces so they are slightly flat but not fully flat.

 

Pass threw the highest setting 3 times making sure you stretch duringeach pass and flour if needed.

 

Repeat till its at a setting ur happy with then cut.

Ikea delivery arrived nice and early this morning and two lovely chaps carted the whole lot into the lift, up one floor, then the whole length of the building and into the lounge. I know it's what they were paid to do, but I've read stories of deliveries being dumped in the entrance etc, so I was a bit relieved.

 

Getting back to the cooking stuff, I've only ever used a gas hob. The new hob is electric. I believe you have to be careful not to scratch it moving pans about etc, and I would guess it's best to clean splashes and spills fairly quickly, but any other tips?
