Hi all,

Before I start I'd like to say what a great looking site this is, full of very useful and helpul information - congratulations!!

Having looked through the forums like many other people I have recently recieved a letter first from Telogram then a week later from HL Legal...

The telogram letter says they are acting as agents for CapQuest Investments and have been requested to make enquiries to establish my address - the last known address they quote is one I left some 16 or 17 years ago.

It says their client has an obligation to update the file with data concerning change of address and they have instructed specialist agencies to confirm this address or establish a new one.

There is no reference as to why they want this information other than to pass it onto their client (I guess Capquest).

The second letter from HL Legal which arrived exactly one week later says they act for Telogram and basically that I have not responded to their attempt to contact me and it is now necessary for me to call them on 0845 ...... at the earliest opportunity to establish whether the information their client holds is relevant ot me or not.

If I don't contact them by a certain date then follow up action will be taken including further attempts to contact me me which may include a visit to the above address for verification purposes and to stop this action I must contact their client (Telogram).

Now the only reason they are giving in wanting this inforamtion accodring to their letters is to assit me in ensuring that the data held by the agencies is correct and this can only be done if I make contact however from reading through the other posts I don't think making contact seems to be a good idea!! I asusme from reading the other posts that these people are a debt collection agency, though there is no mention of this is either of the letters and as I said nothing to indicate why they are looking for this info and I don't want to be giving out personal info to someone without first knowing who they are and what they want it for!! and I am not aware of having left any debt behind me all those years ago.....

So am I doing the right thing by ignoring these letters so far? Is there anything else I can do or should be doing??

Thanks for taking the time to read through this, gramatically it probably isn't great!! Any help or advice would be most gratefully received.....

Yes, Ignor... They are just fishing.

If they really have beef with you then they will in time send a real letter. Untill then just file them away.

Any visitors (which are extremly unlikely) can be told to get of your land. They have no powers. Its all an act to get you to bite.

When and if you do get a real letter then post it up and we can help you get rid.

  • 2 weeks later...

Back again!!

So got another letter from Capquest this week...

apparently they have bought the debt from Abbey which is just under £1000 (for a bank account/loan) which they purchased in July this year, there is no reference as to when the debt is from and I don't remember having any financial dealings with Abbey - certainly not within the last 10 years and I am pretty sure I never have...

It says that I have been contacted by Abbey or one or more of their appointed agents (which I haven't) and the debt still legally exists and is now payable to Capquest.

Taking this into consideration (they say) and the fact that their client wishes to come to an amicable arrangement they are authorised to offer a large discount that will end the matter once and for all.

So they have offered to reduce the bill to £500 which can be paid as a one off or over a time that is acceptable to all and to accept the offer I should phone them so they can set up a payment schedule that is suitable to me. Failure to contact them by Nov 6 will result in the offer being withdrawn and the full amount will be legally owed by me...

As I mentioned I can't remember any financial dealings with Abbey and there is no mention of when the debt is from. If it is a legitmate debt I am happy enough to pay it so I guess now I need to go about finding out if it is genuine or not??

Once again all advice will be very much appreciated.....

Back again!!!

I sent the "prove it" letter to capquest and this week got a reply from them as follows.....

Debt Purchased from: Abbey

Account Number: xxxxxxxxxxx

Balance:xxxx

Further to your recent correspondence and in order to process your communication further, we would request the following information by 12 Nov 09 to assist us in resolving this matter:

Proof of identity (ie photocopy of Driving Licence, Identity Card or Passport) would assist us to progess the account accordingly.

Proof of address at the time this account was opened: 20 Apr 09

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please note this is not a demand but a request.

Standard enough reply I guess but here are a few questions that spring to mind.......

Is the date they have as the time the account was opened the date that they opened the account or the date they are saying the account with Abbey was opened? Not really important, as I mentioned in a previous post I am pretty sure I haven't had any financial dealing with Abbey and absolutely certain not within the last 15 years.

The account number at the top of the letter, is that a capquest account number or an Abbey account number....

What are the next steps I can take or what can I expect next from Capquest.

Do I provide them with the information the have requested - surely they must already have this if they are claiming that the debt is mine??

Thanks again for the help so far!!!!

Thanks for that PGH, the reason I asked about the date is that in one of the other letters I got from Capquest it said they purchased the debt in July this year so was wondering where the April 09 date came from..

I'll sit by the letter box waiting for the next letter to arrive then!!

Thanks again.....
