My friend works within a company who occasionally have work meetings when the company is closed. These meetings are usually on his days off but he is expected to come in. The management have informed him that he will be paid for these meetings however.

Can they make him come in on his days off?

IMHO attendance at an occasional meeting is not really a great hardship, the company aren't being unreasonable, does your friend participate in the discussion.

That rather depends how many days off he has. Some people have 3 days off a week, some people only get 2 days every 2 weeks.

Post by me are intended as a discussion of the issues involved, as these are of general interest to me and others on the forum. Although it is hoped such discussion will be of use to readers, before exposing yourself to risk of loss you should not rely on any principles discussed without confirming the situation with a qualified person.

How long has he worked there?

Was it made clear from day one that his 'core' hours of work would be e.g '9-5 Mon - Fri. In addition you will be required to attend meetings that do not exceed X hours per month outside of these hours, for which you will be paid your normal rate of pay'

If so, this could be viewed as a reasonable mgm't instruction.

If not, then a lot could depend on how long he as acquiesced to this. Could a T & C of his contract have developed via custom and practice?
