the official Ofcom release

its still a bit open

0870 rules | Ofcom

here

Enforcement action

They will also be responsible for making sure their customers know how much they will be charged for calling an 0870 number.

Communications providers will not be allowed to advertise 0870 numbers as 'national rate' unless they are charging at geographic rates.

If they do not comply with these rules, they could be subject to enforcement action including possible fines.

Ofcom's new rules should also effectively end revenue sharing on 0870 numbers.

Ofcom welcomes steps that some fixed line companies have already taken to include calls to 0870 numbers in call packages and reduce their prices.

NEVER FORGET

Both BT and Virgin have stated 0870 will be charged as I outlined.

What OFCOM state they will or will not do is a bit of an irrelevance, as they caused all this nonsense in the first place, so they are hardly able to take any moral high ground! As enforcement is an issue between the network and the regulator, the consumer is of no consequence.

I have been an extensive user of services on 0870 which are (were) totally self-funded by the call revenue (free Fax Routing, Call Routing etc) and all these service are now chargeable to me as landline carriers are being charged standard connection rates - so, as mobiles remain the exception to the rule, I can confirm that for the networks names, 0870 is charges the name asd a standard call (in much the same way as there is now no 'local' or national-charged calls).

I don't pay for 01,02,03 numbers at all so as far as I am concerned they are still a rip off.

dpick

How can they be, when 0870 is now INCLUIDED as 'free to dial' if part of your bundle?
