Hi all,

A friend of mine has a son who lives on his own - he is on benefits. He's got himself into the 'charges cycle' whereby every time he gets his benefit paid into the bank, some of it is deducted in bank charges and because these are added to his account before his payment goes in, it is leaving him with less and less to live on each time. This is a proper vicious circle.

Now I'm sure he has a good case to reclaim these charges under hardship rules, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what he could do immediately?

I understand that it is possible to ringfence his funds somehow, but I can't remember how.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Regards.

Fred

Before you criticise another man you should first walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you criticise him, you'll be a mile away and he won't have any shoes on.

Don't get me confused with somebody knowledgeable by all those green blobs. I got most of them by making people laugh.

I am not European, I am English.

First Right of Appropriation letter for the benefits.

Change banks and pay off the amount as token payments.

Is it Direct Debits that is taking the account overdrawn?

I'm not sure it is a financial hardship case to be honest.

Thanks Yourbank. The link doesn't work, but now that I know what I'm looking for, I should be able to find it.

Regards.
