Just a quick question -

 

has anybody used one of these to book and pay for a hire car abroad?

 

Also have you presented it at the car hire desk when picking up the vehicle and was it accepted?

There's no problem using them, HOWEVER whether it would work for you or not depends on that 'shadow' charge they place on the card at the time of collection. If the total hire charge is (say) €250, it would not be uncommon for them to block off €750 of you funds for the ENTIRE length of your hire, effectively ring-fencing all this 'credit' until they take the amount due for the hire and confirm the cancellation of the shadow charge.

 

You would have to have a credit in excess of this charge t ensure the card would be accepted as surety - remembering that those funds are locked and you cannot get access to them.

cheers busby, Iwas going to pay up front and just use the card as surety, but have decided that where we are going there is enough public transport for our needs
