Hello everyone,

I have a question. I was in a job but got offered a new job so I didn't want to quit my other job untill I had at least the first day in my new job to make sure I liked it etc?

So heres what I did Im due in my old job on Friday but did not go in as I felt ill so rang up sick, got a phone call offering me my new job later that day on the Friday and they ask me to start on the Sunday. I was also due in my old job on the Sunday. By Sunday I felt OK again so didn't want to lie to my old job and say I was sick as I was wasn't so I rang in and said I wasn't going to be at work today and they ask me why but didn't tell them why. So I started my new job on the Sunday and liked it so I went to my old work on the Monday and quit.

When I was in there the manager said well you rang up sick on Sunday and Friday but you won't get paid for those days as its the first 3 days of sick and you dont get SSP till the 4th day onwards (not that I wanted it anyhow). But I didn't ring up sick on Sunday just on the Friday???

The my mum was like ahhh you could be in trouble if you said you were off sick and you went into another job??? Could this be true? Would my old job say that I was off sick on the Sunday and send it too the Tax people who would then see I was in a new job that day??

Now Im all stressed out and worried.....as you can probably tell I suffer from bad anxiety. Can any help me please???

PS Because my wages were so low I didnt have to pay Tax on them.

I suppose that because they already had on your file that you called in sick on Friday they just reasonably assumed that you were still sick on Sunday.

As long as you're not being paid for Sunday then I can't see what you be in trouble for.

(Except possibly, trouble with your Mum for telling fibs.)

so rather a moot point then, that they would tell the taxman:D

sounds like a wind up by your mum

They will tell the taxman of the last day of employment - they have to. Likewise, your new employer will need to tell them your first day. There will be an overlap but HMRC won't worry until the end of the tax year; when you may have to do a tax return.

Also, your new employer may well use a basic rate (BR) tax code as they don't yet have your P45.

OK, could I be in trouble with the Tax man in this situation....

Started new job on the Thursday wasnt due back in my new job till the Saturday....was due in my old job on the Friday but had a stomach upset so called in on the Friday morning to say I wasnt well to my old job, went to work at my new job on the Saturday, was due in my old job and my new job on the Sunday but phoned in my old job on the Sunday and said I wasnt going in, when they ask me why I didnt tell them and went to my New job that day (sunday). The monday I quit my old job.

a) I didnt get paid for the two days I took off from my old job.

b) I didnt pay tax in my old job as my wage was so low.

I do suffer from anxiety pretty bad and overly worry.

I know its pretty complicated but am I in trouble with the Taxman for that?

Don't worry, you're not in any trouble at all with the 'Taxman'.

Plenty of people have more than one job these days and they don't start them all on the same day.

Your personal tax allowance was being applied to your old job and because your gross pay was less than you tax allowance you paid no tax.

1. Your old employer should send/give you a P45.

It will show your earnings since April, your tax code, (personal allowance) and how much, if any tax you have paid.

You should give this to your new employer.

2. Or, your new employer could give you a P46 form to fill in so that they can find out what your personal allowance is.

Until I or 2 is sorted your new employer will put you on emergency tax (BR- no personal tax allowance).

When your tax code is sorted you'll probably get a tax rebate.

If not, the Taxman will send you a rebate cheque next April.

As patdavies has said if the 'Taxman' has any queries they'll send you a form to fill in.

It isn't complicated at all and there is no need for you to worry.:)

Thats so much Marie! Thats been a big help.

When I started my new job on the Thursday I didn't work anymore for my old job and didn't get paid for the time off I took from my old job so on the Thursday when I started my new job they had me fill out a P46 I think it was. On the p46 I filled in part B I think which was 'This is my only job now but I have worked in this Tax Year' as I was pretty sure I wasnt going back to my old job anymore.
