Here's probably the best free alternative to Winzip:- 7zip. LINK

 

Supported formats:

  • Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
  • Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.

You have the right to food money.

If you don't mind a little investigation, humiliation, and if you cross your fingers rehabilitation..............

Windows opens and makes ZIP files natively in XP and Vista though not other archives.

 

7zip is your best bet.

WinZip is a paid-for program it is NOT free - but there are alternatives and as noted above, Windows handles it routinely.

 

 

the earlier versions of winzip up to v7,0 were free and can still be found using google

Actually no - they were SHAREWARE (not free) you paid them a little money and got a registration code to unlock a pile of features. It has never been 'free' in the sense you suggest.
