Can my employer make credit/background checks on me without my permission?

I have discovered that a manager where I work has submitted a request for information on me to an agency. I'm not sure whether it is a background or credit check, can they do this without my permission. I'm not sure if the manager has done this alone or was asked to do it by the Directors. It was done 4 months after I started the joband I have just discovered it.

Were you advised when you applied for the job is successful a disclosure would be required?

What sort of employment is it i.e. to do with money/cash handling/children/adults etc.,

If its not nor was it mentioned then you need to ask your employer what are they playing at.

How have you found this out?

Do you have a contract that says anything about it?

If you were going to rent a property then you have to sign a form giving your permission for them to do a check on you. If they try to do a check on you without your permission I would imagine there is some law to stop that happening.
