When you say it had been playing up, what do you mean exactly? If you can describe the noise/behaviour it might help in figuring out what the most likely problem could be. Trouble is, there are a lot of things that can stop a car from starting. Does it start ok when warmed up but not when cold etc etc?

always starts, only lately behaves like their is no spark, it makes the usual turning over noises, really cant do any better than that, is it the starter motor or the leads not connected properly, I checked all the leads, they are all on fine.

Could be any of the following:

Worn/ damaged spark plugs.

Crankshaft position sensor.

Mass airflow sensor.

Coolant temperature sensor.

Fuel supply problem.

And more....

When a car starts there has to be an exact mixture of fuel and air in the cylinders for the 'firing' process to happen correctly. If for any reason there isnt enough air, or enough fuel, it won't fire up. Also if there isn't a spark, it wont ignite.

Really hard to diagnose without actually fiddling with the engine.

Did it just suddenly stop working or did it deteriorate over time?

ok, now it seems there is an ongoing problem with the immobilisers on renault clios, google has a whole group of people experiencing same issue and after rain has gotten into the sun roof, also with the small wire to starter motor and the crank (?) something sensore, does any of this help? mean nothig to me.

I see you mention crankshaft sensor!

If it deteriorated over time, it's not the immobiliser (it either immobilises or it doesn't). But when you say it deteriorated over time, do you mean it stuttered on ignition, and the stuttering got worse, or do you mean that it turned over for progressively longer periods before 'firing', or something else? In what way did it deteriorate?

wow, you are right this is complicated lol - okay, it refused to 'fire' and took several attempts. do you mean by stuttering that it sounded like it would fire but just made winding sound and if keep trying this would eventual just flatten battery completely!

Did you notice it starting ok when it was warm (after driving round for a while), or was the problem still there regardless of the engine temperature? Did it misbehave when it was idling, like when you were sitting at traffic lights?

ok - idles fine, restarts fine, seems to be after sitting a while, so cold then. actually wouldnt restart once after driving to a local shop??

First thing I'd say is maybe spark plugs, that's usually a good starting point. A worn spark plug might work fine when warm but if it's not in good condition it will fail to operate correctly when cold. If you can change the spark plugs you will either solve the problem or rule out spark plugs as being the cause :p

When did you last get them replaced?

You will either need to get the immobilser repaired or inform your insurer that the factory-fitted immobiliser is no longer in use.
