Need a bit of info from the experts.

I have recently checked my credit file from Equifax and noted that an old EGG account appears as defaulted on my file TWICE.

Once from EGG and once from LOWELL - both with same amount / same date.

I contacted Equifax to ask them to remove the duplicate and they replied that both EGG and LOWELL say the data is good - so case closed.

After pressing them further they then said EGG has sold the debt to LOWELL and market the default as "settled" which therefore allows LOWELL to add a new default for the new "active" account.

(I always thought that once an account defaults it's effectively closed so how can it default again......)

Is this correct? After all - what's to stop LOWELL selling debt onto X and them doing exactly the same - the default would just get recycled and never drop off.
